When You’re in the Field Deer Hunting, Don’t Drink

Marty Prokop |2008

Sounds pretty basic, but each year some deer hunters choose to be drunk while out deer hunting.

Think about it.

When a person is out deer hunting you would think he or she would want to have all abilities and senses at their height, not dulled by the buzz of booze.

texto con relacion a la fotoI once deer hunted with a guy who carried a fifth of whatever he had, as well as a twelve pack of beer in his pockets and fanny pack.

Notice I said ONCE.

I didn’t know this guy wanted to drink while in the field deer hunting. Had I known or thought to ask prior, I would have chosen not to deer hunt with him.

We went our separate directions, although we were hunting the same land. I went the opposite direction, but in his stupor he ended up hunting the same area.

While out in field, I ran into this guy, who by 10 am was totally wasted.

He couldn’t tell if the noise he heard was a deer or what.

When I was walking through the undergrowth wearing bright orange hunting clothing and happened to come upon him, I saw him pointing the rifle in my direction saying to me, "I thought you were a deer coming at me."

I hoofed it back to my truck and waited for him to come in. We packed it up the next morning. I never hunted with him again.

What if through his drunkenness, he had decided that I was a deer? I hate to think of what could have happened.

If you do decide to have a drink after deer hunting hours, drink responsibly. Don’t over do it.

Remember, your actions are important and matter. You are setting an example for the younger generation and represent our sport to others.
